Indication

Used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. Also used to protect the kidneys in patients with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

Ingredients

• Losartan potassium 50 mg

Direction

Adults: 50 mg once daily. Dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily. Take with or without food.

Side effects

• Dizziness
• Hypotension (low blood pressure)
• Hyperkalemia (elevated potassium)
• Increased serum creatinine / renal impairment
• Cough (less frequent than ACE inhibitors)
• Fatigue
• Back pain

Precautions

• Contraindicated in pregnancy (especially 2nd and 3rd trimester) — can cause fetal harm.
• Do not use concomitantly with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or renal impairment.
• Monitor renal function

• and blood pressure regularly.
• Use with caution in patients with renal artery stenosis

• May interact with potassium supplements
