Diabetmin 500 mg

Indication

Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone do not control blood glucose; may be used alone or with other antidiabetic agents or insulin.

Ingredients

• Metformin hydrochloride 500 mg

Direction

For oral use. Usual starting dose 500 mg two to three times daily with or after meals, adjusted by the doctor according to blood glucose (maximum usually 3 g daily in divided doses). Swallow whole with water. Refer to the package insert.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain and loss of appetite
• mostly at the start of treatment.
• Metallic taste.
• Vitamin B12 deficiency with long
• term use.
• Rarely lactic acidosis (a serious condition) – seek urgent medical help if muscle pain
• breathing difficulty or severe tiredness occurs.
• Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use and if any unusual effect occurs.

Precautions

• Prescription only medicine (POM).
• Do not use in severe kidney impairment
• liver failure
• diabetic ketoacidosis
• severe infection
• dehydration or heavy alcohol use.
• Stop temporarily before surgery or iodinated contrast X
• ray examinations as advised by the doctor.
• Monitor kidney function and blood glucose regularly.
• Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use and if any unusual effect occurs.
