Ciprotex 2 Ciprofloxacin 500mg

Indication

Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, gastrointestinal infections, sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhoea), and anthrax prophylaxis.

Ingredients

• Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride 500 mg

Direction

Adults: Take one 500 mg tablet twice daily (every 12 hours) with or without food. Duration depends on the type and severity of infection (typically 5–14 days). For uncomplicated UTI: 250–500 mg twice daily for 3–7 days. Drink plenty of fluids during treatment.

Side effects

• Nausea
• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain
• Headache
• dizziness
• Rash
• photosensitivity
• Tendinitis or tendon rupture (rare but serious)
• Peripheral neuropathy (rare but serious)
• Clostridioides difficile
• associated diarrhoea

Precautions

• Do not use if allergic to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
• Risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture — discontinue at first sign of tendon pain
• risk is higher in elderly
• patients on corticosteroids
• or with renal impairment.
• May cause peripheral neuropathy — discontinue if symptoms of neuropathy occur.
• May prolong QT interval — avoid in patients with known QT prolongation or taking other QT
• prolonging drugs.
• Avoid excessive sun exposure — may cause photosensitivity.
• Ciprofloxacin can cause serious CNS effects (seizures
• confusion) — use with caution in patients with CNS disorders.
• Avoid antacids
• iron
• zinc
• or dairy products within 2 hours of taking ciprofloxacin (reduces absorption).
• Not recommended in pregnancy
• breastfeeding
• or in children (cartilage damage in weight
• bearing joints).
• Keep out of reach of children.
