Azikap 250 Azithromycin 250mg

Indication

A macrolide antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Ingredients

• Azithromycin 250 mg

Direction

Adults: typically 500 mg on Day 1, then 250 mg once daily on Days 2–5 (total course 1.5 g) for respiratory and skin infections. For sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia): 1 g as a single dose. Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Complete the full course.

Side effects

• Nausea
• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain
• vomiting.
• Headache.
• Abnormal liver function tests.
• QT prolongation (rare but serious).
• Rarely: severe allergic reactions
• Clostridium difficile
• associated diarrhoea.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics.
• Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
• May prolong QT interval
• use with caution in patients with cardiac arrhythmias.
• Complete the full prescribed course even if feeling better.
• Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
• Avoid antacids containing aluminium or magnesium within 2 hours of taking azithromycin.
