Indication

CIPROTEX 500 mg contains ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal infections (traveller's diarrhoea, typhoid fever), skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhoea), and anthrax prophylaxis.

Ingredients
  • Ciprofloxacin 500 mg
Direction

Adults: 250–750 mg twice daily (every 12 hours) for 3–14 days depending on the type and severity of infection. UTI (uncomplicated): 250 mg twice daily for 3 days. Complicated UTI/pyelonephritis: 500 mg twice daily for 7–14 days. Take with or without food; drink plenty of fluids. Take 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids.

Side effects
  • Nausea
  • vomiting.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness.
  • Insomnia.
  • Photosensitivity.
  • Tendinitis or tendon rupture (rare).
  • Peripheral neuropathy (rare).
  • QT prolongation (rare).
  • Clostridioides difficile
  • associated diarrhoea.
Precautions
  • Not recommended for children
  • adolescents under 18 years (except for specific indications)
  • or during pregnancy/breastfeeding.
  • May cause tendinitis or tendon rupture — risk increased in patients over 60
  • those on corticosteroids
  • and renal/liver transplant recipients.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure — photosensitivity risk.
  • Do not take simultaneously with antacids
  • dairy products
  • or supplements containing calcium
  • magnesium
  • aluminium
  • or iron.
  • May prolong the QT interval.
  • Use with caution in patients with epilepsy or CNS disorders.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
  • Complete the full prescribed course.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
