Side effects

• Headache (very common)
• Flushing
• Dyspepsia
• nausea
• Nasal congestion
• Dizziness
• Visual disturbances: blurred vision
• altered colour perception (blue/green tinge)
• Back pain
• myalgia
• Hypotension (especially with nitrates or alpha
• blockers)
• Priapism (prolonged erection > 4 hours) — rare but serious
• Sudden decrease or loss of hearing or vision — rare

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients taking nitrates in any form (risk of severe hypotension).
• Contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic impairment
• recent stroke or myocardial infarction
• hypotension (blood pressure < 90/50 mmHg)
• or hereditary degenerative retinal disorders.
• Use with caution in patients with anatomical penile deformity (e.g.
• Peyronie's disease) or conditions predisposing to priapism (e.g.
• sickle cell anaemia
• multiple myeloma
• leukaemia).
• Caution in patients also taking alpha
• blockers or other antihypertensives — risk of symptomatic hypotension.
• Seek immediate medical attention if erection persists more than 4 hours (priapism).
• Sudden vision or hearing loss reported
• discontinue and seek medical advice immediately.
• Not for use in women or children.
• Avoid grapefruit juice — may increase plasma levels.
