Indication

Provision of amino acids and energy by intravenous nutrition when oral or enteral intake is inadequate or not possible.

Ingredients

• Mixed amino acids
• free amino acids 2.7% w/v

• sorbitol 5% w/v

Direction

Prescription intravenous infusion by a healthcare professional only. The usual adult 500 mL infusion and rate must be individualized to age, weight, nutrition needs, organ function and clinical condition.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• chills
• fever
• chest discomfort
• palpitations or electrolyte imbalance may occur.
• Hypersensitivity or metabolic complications require stopping the infusion and clinical review.

Precautions

• Contraindicated or unsuitable in hereditary fructose intolerance
• severe amino
• acid metabolism disorders
• hepatic coma
• severe azotemia
• severe acidosis or decompensated heart failure unless specialist
• managed.
• Use cautiously with liver or kidney impairment
• diabetes and in older or severely ill patients
• monitor fluids
• glucose
• electrolytes and metabolic status.
