Indication
Third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic for infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as uncomplicated urinary tract infections, otitis media, pharyngitis and tonsillitis, acute bronchitis and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated gonorrhoea, and typhoid fever.
Ingredients
- Cefixime (as trihydrate)
- equivalent to anhydrous Cefixime 200 mg
Direction
Oral route, as directed by the physician; read the pack insert carefully before use. Usual dose for adults and children over 12 years (or over 50 kg): 400 mg daily, taken as 200 mg (1 tablet) every 12 hours or 400 mg once daily, usually for 7 to 14 days depending on the infection. Complete the full course.
Side effects
- Diarrhoea or loose stools
- abdominal pain
- nausea or indigestion
- Headache or dizziness
- Rash
- itching or hives
- Rarely
- severe diarrhoea (antibiotic
- associated colitis)
- seek medical advice if it is persistent or bloody
- Severe allergic reactions are rare
- stop the medicine and seek medical help immediately
Precautions
- Prescription medicine: use only as directed by a physician
- Do not use if allergic to cefixime
- other cephalosporins or penicillins
- Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney impairment
- consult a doctor
- Complete the full course even if you feel better
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if pregnant or breastfeeding
- Keep this medicine out of reach of children
