Indication
Oral antidiabetic (sulfonylurea) that stimulates insulin release from the pancreas; used together with diet and exercise to control blood sugar in adults with type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus.
Ingredients
- Glibenclamide BP 5 mg
Direction
Oral route, as directed by the physician (refer to the package insert). Usual adult starting dose: 2.5 to 5 mg once daily with breakfast or the first main meal; the doctor adjusts the dose by blood sugar, usually up to 15 mg daily (doses above 10 mg may be divided). Do not skip meals after taking the tablet.
Side effects
- Low blood sugar (sweating
- shaking
- hunger
- dizziness
- confusion)
- especially if meals are missed
- Nausea
- heartburn
- stomach upset or diarrhoea
- Weight gain
- Skin rash
- itching or sensitivity to sunlight
- Rarely
- blood disorders or liver problems (yellow skin/eyes)
- seek medical help
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist if any side effect is troublesome
Precautions
- Prescription
- only medicine
- use only as directed by a physician
- Do not use if allergic to glibenclamide or other sulfonylureas/sulfonamides
- in type 1 diabetes
- diabetic ketoacidosis or severe kidney or liver disease
- Risk of hypoglycaemia is higher in the elderly
- with missed meals
- alcohol
- heavy exercise or kidney/liver impairment
- carry sugar and learn the warning signs
- Avoid alcohol
- Use with caution in G6PD deficiency
- Many medicines can change its effect
- tell the doctor about all other medicines
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- consult a doctor or pharmacist before use
- Keep out of reach of children
